Colour has always been one of my most important things and I have found the largely monochrome past couple of Studio 21 exhibitions challenging for their lack of it. So at first I was very happy with the new theme, but as I started to question my use of colour I realised it was not quite so straight forward as I had hoped. To try to understand it better I kept a colour diary noting the ‘important’ colours of the moment.
A trip to my ‘home’ in Melbourne, via Hong Kong highlighted how important the strong colours and hard light of Australia are important to me. It also made me realise that earth colours are as important for grounding as the zing of strong bright colour is for lifting my mood. Context and juxtaposition, rather than one particular colour are key to my relationship with colour.
